The No-BS Guide to Men's Skincare (It Starts in the Shower)

Most men don't have a skincare routine. They have a survival routine.

Grab whatever's in the shower. Lather up. Rinse. Done. And honestly? That's fine — as long as what you're grabbing isn't quietly wrecking your skin in the process.

Here's the truth: men's skin is 25% thicker than women's, produces more oil, and takes more daily abuse — sun, wind, shaving, outdoor work. It can handle a lot. But it still needs the right foundation. And that foundation starts with what you wash with.

Step 1: Ditch the Chemical Soap

Harsh sulfates and synthetic detergents disrupt your skin's natural moisture barrier. Once that barrier is compromised, your skin either overcompensates (more oil, breakouts) or dries out (flaking, itching, tightness). Switching to a natural cold process soap is the single highest-leverage change most men can make to their skin — and it costs less than a fancy moisturizer.

Step 2: Use Warm Water, Not Scalding Hot

Hot showers feel great. They're also brutal on your skin. Hot water strips natural oils and dilates blood vessels — fine occasionally, damaging as a daily habit. Warm water does the job without the cost. Rinse with cool water to close things up at the end.

Step 3: Actually Let Soap Do Its Job

Work the bar into a real lather before applying. Let it sit on the skin for 30 seconds rather than immediately rinsing. This gives the ingredients time to actually cleanse rather than just slide across the surface.

Step 4: Moisturise (Seriously)

You don't need a 10-step routine. But a basic, fragrance-free moisturiser applied right after towelling off — when your skin is still slightly damp — makes a real difference over time. Shea butter and coconut oil–based products work well for most skin types.

The Rule of Thumb

The best men's skincare routine is the one you'll actually do every day. Keep it simple, keep it natural, and start with what touches your skin the most — your soap.
